Ingredients:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs (or breasts)

  • 1 cup buttermilk

  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional, for marinade)

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup cornstarch

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

  • Cooking spray

Nashville Hot Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter

  • 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder

Directions:

  1. Marinate the Chicken:
In a bowl, combine the buttermilk and hot sauce. Add the chicken, ensuring it’s fully coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 4 hours for deeper flavor.

  2. Prepare the Breading:
In a shallow bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.

  3. Coat the Chicken:
Remove the chicken from the marinade, letting excess drip off. Dredge each piece thoroughly in the flour mixture, pressing gently so the coating adheres well.

  4. Air Fry the Chicken:
Preheat the air fryer to 380°F (193°C). Lightly spray the basket with cooking spray. Arrange the chicken in a single layer and spray the tops lightly.
Air fry for 14–16 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).

  5. Make the Nashville Hot Sauce:
While the chicken cooks, melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir in cayenne pepper, brown sugar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and chili powder until smooth and fragrant.

  6. Sauce the Chicken:
Brush or drizzle the hot sauce generously over the cooked chicken while it’s still hot.

  7. Serve:
Serve immediately with pickles, coleslaw, or white bread for an authentic Nashville-style experience.
